At Prokon, you can invest directly in renewable energy projects and become a co-shareholder by taking out a membership. Find out more about community wind farms and other opportunities for project participation on this page.
Prokon offers you the unique opportunity not only to be a spectator of the energy transition but to actively participate in it. We establish separate investment companies for each wind and solar park to enable you to acquire company shares. Landowners and residents can thus directly engage in the projects we plan on-site and become co-owners.
Comprehensive support
We accompany each project from the initial idea through to implementation and operation. This way, we not only guarantee technical performance but also promote a long-term and sustainable partnership.
Fair investment models
Your participation extends not only to individual turbines, but to the entire wind farm. This provides you with the opportunity to directly partake in the development and success of the whole project.
Many years of experience
We have been active in project development for wind and solar parks since 1995. Our many years of experience ensure the solid and trustworthy implementation of all projects.
We offer several ways to participate in our renewable energy projects:
Would you like more than just a financial stake? Prokon allows you, as a local citizen community, to not only finance one or more wind turbines, but also to take over and operate them on a turnkey basis.
Prokon develops one or more independent citizen wind turbines specifically for your community as part of our project development.
We support you in founding your citizen company and, upon your request, take over the entire planning and realisation of the wind farm until turnkey handover.
You are actively involved in the conceptualisation of project financing and take on the management of your independent citizen company, allowing you direct participation in wind turbines.
With the drawing of a limited partner share, your civic corporation can actively participate in a wind farm GmbH & Co. KG founded by Prokon. The corporation can be an existing civic energy cooperative or a civic corporation of another legal form yet to be founded.
We cover the pre-investment costs in full until the wind farm is commissioned and bear the project implementation risk.
To ensure that your participation is on a solid foundation, we establish the wind farm company and design the wind farm financing.
In cooperation with local banks, Prokon offers defined investment volumes in which you can participate. These investments offer you a pre-determined return, financed and guaranteed by the revenues from our projects. The local bank handles the organisation of this investment product to make the process as simple and transparent as possible for you.
Your benefits at a glance:
Prokon guarantees an attractive interest rate that is above the usual market level, financed by revenues from our wind farm projects.
The entire handling and management of the deposit certificate is carried out by a local bank, making the investment process transparent and straightforward.
The direct participation in wind energy facilities and solar parks offers far more than just financial benefits. It contributes significantly to regional value creation by channeling investments directly into the local economy, creating jobs, and strengthening infrastructure. Additionally, it enables local residents to actively participate in the planning and decision-making process, fostering understanding and identification with the projects. This participation not only increases personal engagement but also enhances acceptance within the community, which is crucial for the success of the energy transition. Overall, citizen engagement promotes ecological sustainability and simultaneously supports the local community, both economically and socially.
"Through direct involvement in our projects, we enable local people to shape their own energy future."
Ragnhild Ofterdinger, Supervisory Board member and employees of Prokon eG
A citizen participation scheme at Prokon enables landowners, residents, and affected communities to directly partake in renewable energy projects. This is done through the acquisition of company shares, making the participants co-partners in a specially established operating company.
Paragraph 6 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) enables the financial participation of municipalities in the revenues from renewable energy installations that are built within their area or in the immediate vicinity of the municipality. This paragraph stipulates that municipalities can receive a payment of 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour fed into the grid, ideally to support local projects and infrastructure. While these payments contribute to local value creation, the use of these funds is at the discretion of the municipality.
Citizen participation promotes local value creation and strengthens the acceptance of renewable energies in the region. Participants benefit not only financially but also by actively shaping the energy future of their community.
Yes, Prokon offers various forms of participation that also allow for smaller investments. This can take place, for example, through cooperative shares or special savings bonds with attractive interest rates, enabling citizens to partake in the success of the projects even with smaller amounts.

Since its founding in 1995, Itzehoe has been the corporate headquarters at the core of Prokon. In the early years, all projects were managed from here before further offices were opened in Mainz and Potsdam. The strategic focus and project development leadership still firmly reside with our team in Itzehoe. In addition to projects in the wind energy sector, the northern German projects for storage systems and nationwide biomethane projects are also managed from here. Itzehoe is also home to our specialists in construction management and electrical engineering. With a dedicated team of currently 24 employees, Itzehoe remains a central hub in our efforts to drive forward the energy transition.

In order to shorten the travel routes from the main location in Itzehoe to the eastern federal states, the Potsdam office was established in autumn 2009 for the acquisition of land for wind power projects. 15 years and numerous wind farms later, the team in the Eastern region has grown to 28 employees who are mainly responsible for the development of wind farms and solar PV ground-mounted systems.
