What is the Stromsee model?

Imagine the German electricity grid as a large lake into which different types of energy flow. On one hand, energy from conventional sources like coal or nuclear power flows into the lake, but at the same time, energy from renewable sources such as wind turbines or solar panels also flows in. All electricity providers draw electricity for their customers from this large reservoir, also known as the electricity lake ("Stromsee") – so a colourful mixture of all types of energy flowing into the lake.

The green wave in the stream lake

The special thing about the Stromsee is that it changes its colour. A few years ago, it was more grey as it was mostly made up of energy generated from conventional, less sustainable sources. But with every wind turbine that turns and every sunbeam captured by solar panels, the Stromsee becomes a little greener. And advanced laws like the EEG also help to increasingly fill the lake with green electricity from renewable energy sources.

By consciously choosing green energy, we can all contribute to keeping the Stromsee its colour - a bright green as a symbol of a clean future.

A little reality check

As helpful as the Stromsee model may be for illustrating the German electricity grid, it has its weaknesses: Unlike water, for example, electricity cannot be truly stored in a lake. The flow and distribution of electricity actually occur concurrently from a physical perspective. Additionally, end consumers do not have direct access to the Stromsee, but rather receive their electricity solely through the infrastructure of the network operators.

We think: The Stromsee model is more than just a metaphor! It is a guiding principle for shaping a sustainable energy future. It emphasises the importance of investing in renewable energy and the need to expand the electricity grid to accommodate the growing amount of green energy.
