In July 2025, Prokon received approval for two additional wind power projects in North Rhine-Westphalia. This not only expands our portfolio but also increases our contribution to the development of renewable energy in the region. Both projects are scheduled to start supplying green electricity from early 2028.
In the Olpe district, within the city area of Attendorn, approval has been granted for four wind turbines of the Nordex N163/6.X type. Each turbine has a capacity of 6.8 megawatts, resulting in a total installed capacity of 27.2 megawatts.
The project area is located in the Sauerland region – a site with strong wind conditions but challenging topography. Delivery and construction pose logistical challenges but also offer excellent conditions for high electricity production. The projected annual yield is around 51 million kilowatt-hours, which would be enough to supply approximately 15,000 households with clean electricity. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2027, with commissioning planned for early 2028. Grid connection will be made via an existing substation; detailed planning is being carried out in close coordination with partners.
In the district of Kleve, in the town of Geldern, the second turbine of the local project was approved at the beginning of July 2025. Approval for the first turbine had already been granted in February. Both wind turbines are of the Vestas V162 type, with a hub height of 119 metres each and a total installed capacity of 14.4 megawatts.
The approval procedure in Geldern was influenced by the new §36a of the State Planning Act (LPlG) – a legal particularity in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) that initially led to delays. A special exemption successfully applied for at the district government has now allowed full approval to be granted.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2027, with commissioning planned for early 2028. According to current planning, the wind farm is expected to generate around 28 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, covering the needs of approximately 8,000 households.
With the projects in Rieflinghausen and Geldern, the tangible contribution to climate-friendly electricity supply in North Rhine-Westphalia continues to grow. Together, both wind farms will produce around 79 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually – enough to supply approximately 23,000 households and save more than 30,000 tonnes of CO₂.
The two approvals clearly demonstrate: when technical planning, regional expertise and legal clarification go hand in hand, even complex procedures can be successfully and sustainably completed. Learn more about our projects:
