Understanding of the energy markets
The energy supply concerns every household and every company, and the market for it is as dynamic as it is complex. The German energy industry forms an interconnected system in which producers, grid operators, and energy suppliers cooperate. The pricing of electricity is a reflection of various factors: In addition to grid fees and statutory levies, structuring costs and contracts between energy suppliers and their suppliers also play a role.
Green electricity comes from renewable sources, but why are prices also rising here? Firstly, the price of electricity is a mix of supply and demand, with long and short-term contracts influencing costs. At Prokon, we try to keep prices stable for our customers by using forward-looking procurement strategies, but it is not always possible to secure the complete amount of required energy at long-term advantageous conditions. In addition, increased structuring costs are leading to an upward trend in the price of green electricity.
You're wondering why, as a producer of renewable energy, we can't simply determine the price of our wind power ourselves? This is where the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) comes into play, which regulates that a large portion of the generated wind power is fed into the grid through a feed-in tariff. This portion is not available for sale within our company. When marketing the remaining electricity freely, Prokon acts as both a buyer and seller, but still needs to adhere to market conditions.
Electricity prices in the market are usually influenced by the costs of the most expensive source of energy. Although renewable energies already cover a significant portion of electricity demand, gas and coal power remain the dominant sources in energy generation. Therefore, contracts for green electricity also reflect this general price trend.
To ensure a reliable power supply, we are integrated into the existing supply system and do not operate on its margins. We also source the necessary energy quantities from our own production, however, market conditions do not allow us to offer them at a lower price.
The future lies in further expanding renewable energies. This is the only way to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and lower energy prices in the long term. Prokon is a committed companion on this path and aims to strive together with you towards a sustainable energy future that is not only environmentally friendly but also economically advantageous.
Green power is becoming more expensive because it is part of a global energy market that is influenced by numerous factors. At Prokon, we are working hard to keep the rise in costs to a minimum while at the same time driving the expansion of renewable energy sources.
Your choice of Prokon is not just a choice for certified green power, but also a commitment to a greener and fairer energy future.
