Mobile Networks – A CO₂ Driver?
Surprising but true: The mobile network sector in Germany causes CO₂ emissions on a scale similar to domestic air travel. This is a trend that continues to grow in light of increasing data usage. WEtell addresses this issue by offsetting all emissions generated from network operations through innovative projects.
CO₂ Offset Through Biochar
To achieve climate neutrality, WEtell relies on biochar projects. In these projects, CO₂ is extracted from forestry and organic residues, compressed into biochar, and permanently stored in the soil – an effective measure for CO₂ reduction. "We offset all emissions arising from our tariffs – from transmission towers to servers," explains Alma Spribille, Managing Director of WEtell.
Investments in Renewable Energy
In addition to offsetting emissions, WEtell invests directly in the expansion of renewable energy. For instance, WEtell has already acquired cooperative shares worth €100,000 in Prokon, which contribute to projects like the construction of the Friedersdorf wind farm in Brandenburg. This makes WEtell tariffs even climate-positive – generating more renewable energy than they consume.
