At Prokon, we have been committed to shaping a sustainable energy future for 30 years. With around 40,000 members, we are one of the largest energy cooperative in Europe.
Green electricity, project development, operation of renewable energy facilities: as citizens, we are making a real contribution to the success of the energy transition. But what exactly is a citizens' energy cooperative?
A citizen energy cooperative is a legally and economically independent community of citizens who have joined together to collectively implement projects for the generation and use of renewable energies. Cooperatives contribute to the energy transition by promoting local and environmentally friendly energy projects and putting energy supply in the hands of citizens.
Legal form
Energy cooperatives are typically organized as registered cooperatives (eG). This legal form ensures that the cooperative is democratically managed and that each member, regardless of the amount of their investment, has a voice.
Goals
Comprehensive expansion of Renewable Energies such as biogas, solar, and wind energy including storage technologies
Contribution to local value creation and job creation in the region.
Increasing independence from fossil energy sources and large energy providers.
Promotion of climate protection and reduction of CO2 emissions.
Membership
Any citizen can become a member by acquiring shares in the cooperative.
Members have participation rights and can contribute to decisions of the cooperative, usually at an annual general meeting.
Financing
The projects are financed through the investments of the members, and through revenues from project development and services for wind farm operators as well as the sale of generated green electricity and biogas.

Prokon eG is selling two wind farms, which have been part of the Prokon portfolio for many years, to Windauf eG. Members of both cooperatives can participate during an exclusive subscription phase.

Prokon aims to double its electricity production to 2 terawatt hours by 2030. With new wind farms, repowering projects, and innovative grid solutions, the cooperative is driving the expansion of wind energy.

With the approvals in Rieflinghausen and Geldern, we are further advancing the energy transition in North Rhine-Westphalia. Commissioning is planned from 2028 – providing clean electricity for more than 20,000 households.

By subscribing to shares, you are investing in the holistic expansion of renewable energies – in wind farms, photovoltaics, biogas from biomass, and battery storage.
As a member of Prokon, you are directly involved in the cooperative's annual profit and receive a dividend, which varies depending on business performance and has ranged between three and five per cent in recent years. Since your contribution is considered equity, you benefit from the cooperative’s economic performance.
Anyone can participate – from private individuals to legal entities such as companies or associations. For minors, the consent of the legal guardians is required.
The dividend is dependent on performance and is decided annually by the General Assembly. In recent years, it has been between 3-5%.
You can become a member by purchasing just one share, with one share costing €50. We cordially invite you to subscribe for at least 10 shares. Not only can you underline your commitment to a sustainable future, but you can also benefit from the financial benefits of your membership.
