Prokon's dynamic electricity tariff for maximum flexibility

Since 1 January 2025, Prokon has been offering a dynamic electricity tariff in addition to the proven monthly and yearly tariffs.

This gives electricity customers the opportunity to shift their consumption to cheaper periods and thus reduce their energy costs. At the same time, the tariff supports the more efficient use of renewable energy – an important step for the energy transition.

How does a dynamic electricity tariff work?

In contrast to traditional electricity tariffs with fixed prices, the energy price of a dynamic tariff is based on fluctuations in the spot market of the energy exchange. Prices change there depending on supply and demand – often on an hourly basis. Particularly low electricity prices occur during

  • strong winds and high solar radiation, when a lot of renewable electricity is fed into the grid, or

  • at night when electricity demand is low

With Prokon's dynamic tariff, consumers can directly benefit from these price fluctuations. 'Households with high electricity consumption can significantly reduce their electricity bills by taking advantage of periods with high generation or low demand,' explains Frank Kalliora, Head of Energy Trading at Prokon.

Who benefits from a dynamic electricity tariff?

Particularly, households that can flexibly manage their electricity consumption benefit, for example, through:

  • electric cars that are automatically charged during cheaper hours with an intelligent wallbox,

  • heat pumps that can operate during periods of low electricity prices,

  • household appliances with a timer function (e.g. washing machines, dishwashers), and

  • robotic lawn mowers that can be activated at especially economical times.

For the new tariff, Prokon is relying on the software solution from Exnaton, a company that has been actively involving private households in the energy transition since 2017.

'Those who sign up for our dynamic electricity tariff will soon be able to see how prices develop hourly for the following day, either in the customer portal or conveniently via an app, and adjust their consumption accordingly,' explains Osman Tefci, Business Development Analyst at Prokon."

Smart meter for hour-accurate billing

In order for electricity consumption to be optimally aligned with the hourly market prices, customers need an intelligent metering system (smart meter). These are already mandatory for:

  • households with an annual consumption of 6,000 kWh or more,

  • owners of photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 7 kWp or more, and

  • users of heat pumps or wallboxes.

From 2025, customers who do not meet these criteria will also be able to request the installation of a smart meter within four months.

'However, you can also benefit from a dynamic electricity tariff without a smart meter,' explains Frank Kalliora. In this case, the price is calculated based on a standard household profile. Alternatively, consumers can regularly submit their meter readings themselves to take advantage of price fluctuations."

Dynamic tariffs as a component of the energy transition

Dynamic tariffs can improve the integration of renewable energies into the grid.

'Customers' willingness to adjust their electricity consumption accordingly is increasing,' says Frank Kalliora. 'Ideally, this will make it possible to operate wind turbines more efficiently in the future and prevent overcapacity—meaning the shutdown of turbines.'

Prokon is already working on another innovative tariff model: 'Our customers will then have the opportunity to align their electricity consumption specifically with the production capacities of our wind turbines. It doesn’t get any greener than that,' explains Kalliora.
