“The Geldern wind farm is moving into implementation: at the beginning of September 2026, construction work started on two wind turbines in North Rhine-Westphalia. Prokon fully developed the project and sold the project company to a private investor from near the project area in May 2026.
The sale of projects is part of our strategy to manage the development of our portfolio flexibly and in a commercially sensible way. Our aim is to retain attractive projects in our own portfolio whenever possible, provided we can raise sufficient equity for them. At the same time, project sales create financial flexibility: they release capital tied up in projects and make it possible to invest in further project development and in new projects of our own. In this way, we sustainably strengthen the growth and future viability of our cooperative.
‘We act responsibly and with foresight. The sale of the Geldern wind farm is a strategic step to secure capital, enable new projects and create long-term value for our members,’ says Henning von Stechow, Member of the Executive Board at Prokon.”
The Geldern wind farm comprises two Nordex N163 wind turbines with a hub height of 118 metres and a total output of 14 megawatts. The project received the EEG tariff award from the Federal Network Agency in January 2026.
However, our work on the wind farm does not end with the sale of the project company. We support the construction, grid connection and commissioning. After that, we take over the technical management of the wind farm. This ensures that our expertise remains involved in the project even after the sale.

A key part of the project is the cable route, which is around six kilometres long. It includes, among other things, a railway crossing and several river crossings. The grid connection is also demanding: a transfer station and a transformer station will be built at the grid feed-in point.
By the end of 2026, the access roads, crane pads and foundations are scheduled to be completed. Delivery of the major components is planned for the end of March to the beginning of April 2027, and installation of the turbines is due to begin in early May 2027. Commissioning is currently scheduled for mid to late June 2027.
The start of construction in Geldern therefore demonstrates both successful project development through to implementation and a flexible strategy with which we secure the greatest possible benefit for our cooperative.
