Many customers are currently receiving letters about their new electricity prices. In 2026, the price components for electricity will also change – in some cases, costs will decrease, in others, they will remain stable. The federal government plans to reduce grid fees with a multi-billion-euro subsidy. However, the extent of this relief varies by region.
At Prokon, one principle always applies: fair, regional prices – based precisely on the actual local grid costs.
For 2026, the federal government has decided on a subsidy of 6.5 billion euros for transmission network costs. This is intended to reduce grid fees – that is, the charges for electricity transmission – and relieve the burden on consumers.
However, the relief is not equally noticeable everywhere: grid fees vary significantly by region – for example, in areas with high feed-in of renewable energy or high population density. While some households will experience a noticeable reduction, in other regions it will barely be measurable.

A reduction in electricity tax for all households, announced in the coalition agreement, has not yet been implemented. The current rate of 2.05 ct/kWh (netto) remains in place.
At Prokon, we are convinced: A general reduction in electricity tax would have been fairer and more climate-friendly – it would have relieved all households regardless of their place of residence and provided additional impetus for the heat and mobility transition. This would have been another step towards sector coupling and climate neutrality.
The electricity price is made up of several components: grid charges, levies, surcharges, sales, procurement, and taxes. For 2026, the following developments can be observed:
Offshore grid levy: increasing from 0.816 ct/kWh to 0.941 ct/kWh
CHP surcharge (Combined Heat and Power): increasing from 0.277 ct/kWh to 0.446 ct/kWh
Federal subsidy: reduces grid charges by an average of around 1.6 ct/kWh – this varies by region, so in some grid areas the relief is significantly lower.
