What Owners of Controllable Consumption Facilities Need to Know Now

So that the energy transition succeeds, we need to make our electricity consumption more flexible – controllable consumer installations such as heat pumps, wallboxes or electricity storage systems play a central role in this. This is because the rising demand for electricity has in the past led to bottlenecks in distribution grids. To ensure grid stability and promote the expansion of controllable consumer installations, Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) has been reformed. What this means for you as the owner of a controllable consumer installation is explained on this page.

Reduced grid fees

Controllable consumption devices such as heat pumps, wallboxes, and electricity storage systems benefit from reduced grid fees. Until the end of 2023, every grid operator granted the same reduction to all controllable consumption devices. Since 01/01/2024, it has been possible to choose between so-called "modules".

Netzdienliche Steuerung

Transition phase for existing devices

If your installation was commissioned before 1 January 2024 and you already have a control agreement in place, you have until the end of 2028 to adapt to the new requirements.

However, an early transition is also possible in this case – including for installations that have not previously had an agreement for grid-oriented control and therefore have not yet benefited from reduced grid charges.
