Grid operators for electricity: An overview of the German energy supply network

The four major network operators in Germany are responsible for the integration of renewable electricity into the German power grid. This is a complex and critical task, particularly within the framework of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). They must not only ensure the balancing of green energy, but also conduct the annual calculation of the EEG surcharge. This requires precise technologies and advanced management strategies to ensure the reliability and efficiency of electricity transfer.

The transformation of the energy sector from fossil and nuclear sources to renewable energy sources requires significant investments in infrastructure. Particularly affected are the national grids, which must transport large amounts of wind power from the north to the industrial centres in southern Germany. These necessary investments lead to rising costs, which ultimately have to be borne by consumers. Network operators in Germany are thus faced with the challenge of finding a balance between necessary expansion investments and the financially acceptable burden on consumers.

He who dares to look into the future discovers great challenges for the network operators in Germany: The integration of an increasing number of renewable energy sources, the digitisation of the energy market, as well as the rising demand for electricity due to electromobility and Industry 4.0, require a continuous adjustment and modernisation of the power grids.
