What is the EEG levy?

The EEG levy forms the financial backbone of the German energy transition and enables the advancement of wind, solar, hydropower, and biomass installations. This system ensures that renewable energies remain competitive and promotes their integration into the power grid.

With Prokon, you will understand the significance of the EEG levy for electricity and its central role in Germany's transition to a sustainable energy supply. By paying your electricity bill, you also directly contribute to the success of the energy transition and support the expansion of clean energy sources.

The development of the EEG surcharge in Germany

Since its introduction in March 2000, the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) has paved the way for green electricity in Germany by guaranteeing its preferential feed-in into the electricity grid. The EEG surcharge finances this measure by spreading the costs of green electricity bought at a fixed price among all electricity consumers. The surcharge reached peaks of over 6 cents per kWh between 2014 and 2021, but dropped to 3.7 cents in 2022 and was removed from the energy price as of that same July. This is due to the increased profitability of photovoltaic and wind energy, as well as the decision of the federal government to additionally support the EEG account with tax funds.

The Renewable Energy Sources Act in detail

The EEG 2023 marks a turning point for the energy transition in Germany by clearly focusing on achieving climate neutrality in line with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement. For electricity consumers at Prokon, this means a nearly doubling of the share of renewable energies in gross electricity consumption within the next decade. An important step towards this is the significant acceleration of the expansion of renewable energy sources on land, at sea, and on rooftops.

Since July 2022, renewable energies have legal priority, significantly speeding up planning and approval processes. This is part of the broader "Easter package" of the federal government, which also advances the expansion of the electricity grid and offshore wind energy and expands the areas for onshore wind turbines through the Onshore Wind Act.

The goal is ambitious: By 2030, at least 80% of Germany's electricity consumption is to come from renewable sources, supported by increased auction volumes for wind and solar power. In addition, innovative solutions such as combining renewable energies with hydrogen-based electricity storage are being promoted to enhance energy security. Furthermore, the feed-in tariffs for new photovoltaic systems on rooftops have been increased, making self-consumption more attractive and simplifying installation.

Must electricity customers pay the EEG surcharge?

Good news: Since 1st July 2022, as an electricity consumer, you can look forward to a noticeable relief in electricity costs as the EEG surcharge is being removed. This move is a result of a law to lower electricity costs that has successfully passed through the Federal Council and has come into effect. As your electricity provider, we are passing on these savings to you in full. Originally planned for early 2023, the Federal Government has decided to bring forward the abolition of the EEG surcharge to provide you with relief sooner in light of rising energy prices. The surcharge will thus decrease from the current 3.72 cents per kilowatt-hour to zero, significantly reducing your electricity bill. Thanks to the Federal Government's "Easter package", this relief is not a short-term gift - the EEG surcharge has been permanently abolished for end consumers since January 2023.
