In wind energy installations (WEA), “residual electricity” refers to the amount of electrical energy that must be drawn from the public grid. It is also often referred to as the plant’s own electricity consumption.
That depends on the location, weather and many other factors. As a rule, consumption is in the low percentage range of a wind turbine’s annual output — usually between 0.5 and 2 per cent.
Because electricity generation from wind power (and also photovoltaics) depends on the weather, residual electricity compensates for the difference between current consumption and the plant’s output at the moment when the plant is not producing enough electricity for its own needs. Residual electricity is also incurred during maintenance of a plant.
In winter, a wind turbine always requires electricity to prevent the technical equipment from freezing. Electronic components also need to be heated so that no moisture forms. In addition, when the plant is started up after a period of downtime, brief load peaks occur. A forced shutdown is another reason to keep residual electricity available for a wind turbine.
Yes! Our electricity comes from our own wind farms. The guarantees of origin for the electricity we sell also come from our German wind farms.
Wind farms with on-site storage (also known as co-located storage) can reduce their residual electricity demand by covering the remaining power supply for the wind turbines, where possible, with electricity stored on site.
The carbon footprint of a wind farm can be presented transparently by splitting the annual electricity consumption into self-generated power and residual grid electricity on a percentage basis. This makes it clear that self-supply accounts for the largest share of the electricity supply. A wind turbine is not completely self-sufficient, but it can fully cover its electricity demand with residual electricity supply from Prokon, entirely from renewable energy sources.
