With the adoption of the annual financial statements in mid-2025, Prokon board members Katharina Beyer and Henning von Stechow take stock: How did 2024 go – and what does it mean for the cooperative’s future direction? Their conclusion is clear: “There must be no pause in the energy transition.” The review highlights strong progress, openly addresses obstacles, and outlines the path to 2030.
Globally, 2024 was a record year for wind energy. According to the Global Wind Energy Council, the globally installed capacity grew by 117 gigawatts. Germany ranked third in the international country ranking, just behind the USA. Domestically, almost 112 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were generated onshore – making wind power the most significant energy source in German electricity generation, accounting for more than a quarter of the total.
The general conditions also improved: around 2,400 new wind turbines with a capacity of around 14,000 megawatts were approved in Germany in 2024, with approval processes taking an average of just 23 months – significantly shorter than the previous year. Measures such as accelerated approvals, higher tender volumes, and the Onshore Wind Act, which mandates a two percent land allocation per federal state by early 2030, are providing important momentum.
Prokon itself has taken significant steps in 2024:
**Sites secured:** 500 megawatts at new locations have been contractually secured.
**Permits:** Permits have been granted for 126.5 megawatts – the highest figure since 2017.
**Newly connected to the grid:** Three wind farms went into operation: Rusiec II (Poland) and Björkliden (Finland), with a combined capacity of 58.9 MW, as well as the Friedersdorf wind farm in Brandenburg with 22 MW.
In total, these installations can theoretically supply over 60,000 households with clean electricity.
"Despite some critical public debate, the traffic light coalition government has achieved significant successes and set important impulses in the field of renewable energies."
Katharina Beyer, Vorständin der Prokon eG
In addition to successes, 2024 was also marked by challenges. In Germany, wind yields fell short of expectations, while low electricity prices led to reduced feed-in revenues. Competition for land intensified, driving up lease costs, while material, technology, and personnel expenses also increased.
Operationally, Prokon responded with consistent cost management, among other measures. In Poland, technicians were able to restore turbine availability to the usual level – an important contribution to stabilising revenues.
Significant progress was made in the digitalisation of the service organisation, as well as with the relaunch of the website, which makes the Prokon world even more user-friendly for members, electricity customers, and other interested parties.
The cooperative itself remains a key pillar: as of 31 December 2024, 40,811 members were engaged – the highest number to date. The cooperative capital increased by nearly 17 million euros to 256.5 million euros.
2025 is a special year: 30 years of Prokon and 10 years as an energy cooperative. Despite unusually weak wind conditions in the first months of 2025, Prokon remains committed to its expansion course. The central goal is to double its own electricity production by 2030 – to two terawatt hours.
"We want to help shape Germany's energy policy future; with further investments in wind and solar energy, smart grids, and modern storage technologies, we can achieve the transformation of our energy system – with positive effects on the climate, health, and competitiveness."
Henning von Stechow, Vorstandsvorsitzender der Prokon eG
